Case Managers & Counselors

Don Langford

Case Manager

I am one of 2 Case Managers for the Whale Foundation. I have been with Whale for the past 10 years. I am a retired Licensed Professional Counselor who had a 25 year private practice following 11 years working with a community mental health center. I have lived in Prescott since 1977 and raised 2 sons there. As an active outdoors person, I have hiked all the trails in the Grand Canyon at least once and have run the Colorado many times as well as the Green, the San Juan and other rivers of the Southwest. I continue to kayak, paddleboard and mountain bike as well. My outdoor activities help in relating to the issues many river guides present when they call in requesting services. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling from Arizona State University. My goal is to connect you with the best provider or service, and to support you through life's challenges as a member of the Colorado River Community, either on or off the river.

Eric Smith

Case Manager

Hi, I’m Eric Smith. I’m a Case Manager for the Whale Foundation based in Flagstaff. I help connect folks in the guiding community to mental health services by answering calls, making referrals, and offering support with care and understanding.

I have several years of experience in community mental health, substance use treatment, and harm reduction, working as a case manager, BHT, and peer support specialist. I’m currently finishing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at GCU and have a B.S. in Environmental Science from NAU.

I was born and raised in Flagstaff and grew up rafting, backpacking, and exploring the Southwest. Being able to support the guiding community feels close to home.

Cody Bayes

Cody was born and raised in FLG, AZ. He earned his MA in Community Counseling and PhD in Counseling Psychology from Northern Arizona University. While attending school, he worked in community mental health for 9 years at The Guidance Center in a variety of roles that addressed general mental health and substance use disorders. In 2018, he joined Flagstaff Counseling Center as a partner prior to starting Beyond the Pines alongside Dan Phillips in 2021.

When it comes to therapy, Cody believes the quality of the therapeutic relationship paves the way for change by helping people develop self-awareness and understand the reciprocal relationship between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how those three items are influenced by the environment and personal life experiences.

Cody is also an approved clinical supervisor through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. His research interests include ecotherapy, organizational psychology, and mindfulness based approaches to therapy and their outcomes.

Jake Werley

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both Arizona and California. After attending Fuller Seminary's Graduate School of Psychology, I worked in a community-based non-profit practice for nearly ten years. For the past four years, I’ve simultaneously run a private practice. I’ve worked extensively with families, individuals, children, parents, and couples dealing with an array different types of struggles and diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

My mother shares that when I was a toddler, she’d wheel me around the grocery store in our small town, and I’d constantly lock eyes with passersby and begin talking with them. I have loved people all my life and consider the process of partnering with you in therapy to be sacred, important work. While I ultimately wish there was not a need for therapists in life, (and am constantly trying to work myself out of a job), I do love what I do.

If I seem like the kind of person you’d be comfortable sorting through the hard stuff of life with, contact me.  I’m here and wanting to help.
